Trisha Krishnan (Tamil: த்ரிஷா கிருஷ்ணன்; born on 4 May 1983) is an Indian film actress and model who has prominently been appearing in Tamil and Telugu films.[2] After her first appearance in the 1999 Tamil film Jodi, as a supporting role character, she won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for her first lead role in the 2002 film Mounam Pesiyadhe. She later rose to fame after starring in the successful films, Saamy (2003) and Ghilli (2004) in Tamil cinema and Varsham (2004) in Telugu cinema, for which she secured her first South Filmfare Best Actress Award. She is said to be the highest paid actress in south India.[3] She made her debut in Bollywood with the film Khatta Meetha.[4][5]
Early life
Born to Krishnan Iyer and Uma Krishnan, in Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, the Tamil actress got her higher education from Ethiraj College in Madras. She studied at Sacred Heart Church Park School.[6] In school, she participated in several cultural activities, sports and school band. While studying in college, she ventured into part-time modelling, participated in various beauty pageants. As part of her modelling career, she appeared in many TV advertisements including that of Fair and Lovely and Josco Jeweller. She also starred in Falguni Pathak's music album Meri Chunar Ud Ud Jaye.[7][8]
Film career
Trisha Krishnan, soon after her pageant success, began her career acting in an uncreditted role as Simran's friend in Jodi, before moving onto appear in advertisements and in music videos, with Falguni Pathak's Meri Chunar Ud Ud Jaye being the most prominent. The first project she accepted was the Priyadarshan-directed Lesa Lesa, with the promotional posters for the film, also creating an offer to star in the A. R. Rahman musical, Enakku 20 Unakku 18.[9] However both the projects' releases were severely delayed, and her first release was Ameer's Mounam Pesiyadhe opposite Surya Sivakumar. The film became a moderate success at the box office and did manage to gain credentials for Trisha, with critics claiming that she was "undoubtedly a refreshing new find, with sparkling eyes and appealing demeanour", also going onto praise the dubbing artiste, Savitha Reddy, who has since regularly dubbed for Trisha.[10] Manasellam, her second project, saw her play a cancer patient; but the film also went unnoticed despite positive reviews for the film and the actress. [11] She is not a very popular actress.
Success in Tamil and Telugu
However her next in 2003, the Hari-directed police film, Saamy with Vikram, became a blockbuster at the box office, landing her new offers. In the same year she starred in Varsham in Telugu which went on to become the biggest hit of the year and turned her into an overnight sensation. In 2005, she starred alongside Siddharth Narayan in the Telugu flick Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana as the village girl Siri. The movie is about a rich boy, who tries to marry a girl - however her brother opposes. It is directed by Prabhu Deva, was successful at the box office,[12] and Krishnan won two awards for the film which include the Filmfare Award and Nandi Award.[13]
She appeared in Mani Ratnam's Aayutha Ezhuthu which was remade into a hit Hindi movie Yuva. The Tamil version included Siddharth Narayan, Madhavan and Surya. Her later movies, Jiand Aathi did not do well, while Aaru was a success and was received well by critics and both dubbed in Tamil and Telugu and produced by Saran, who had previously directed several successful movies.[14] Her 2006 Telugu movie, Pournami, directed by Prabhu Deva, was a flop. However, another 2006 film, Something Something ... Unnakum Ennakum, where Krishnan acted opposite Jayam Ravi, did well at the box office. Something Something ... Unnakum Ennakum is a remake of the Telugu movie, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana where she plays the same role.
She starred in the Telugu film Stalin with Chiranjeevi. Then her telugu movieSainikudu with Mahesh Babu was released on 30 November 2006.
Her next release after Sainikudu was Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule where she was cast opposite Venkatesh. This film was Selvaraghavan's first film in Telugu. The film released on 27 April 2007. The film is a family entertainer and received good response especially from the family audience. The box office returns exceeded the collections of later releases like Aata and Munna. Krishnan's performance is one of the highlights of the movie.
In Kireedam with Ajith, Krishnan tried comedy and received rave reviews. Kireedom opened with high expectations and received good reviews from media and audience and was a hit. Her 2008 films, Bheema and Kuruvi failed to succeed at the box-office, whilst Krishna with Ravi Teja, opened to rave reviews[citation needed]. Her other movie Bujjigadu starring Prabhas, directed by Puri Jagannadh was released during Summer and made a decent run. However Radhamohan's Abhiyum Naanum became a super hit and Krishnan was praised for her performance. King starring Akkineni Nagarjuna directed by Sreenu Vaitla was a December release and it became a blockbuster.
Recent work
In 2009 her movie Sarvam with Arya did not do well and became just an average grosser. Her latest Tamil release Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, directed by Gautham Menon opposite Silambarasan, was released on 26 February 2010 to positive reviews and also became a commercial success. Her 2010 Telugu release Namo Venkatesa, opposite Venkatesh, is a super hit. Krishnan is now starring in Manmadhan Ambu with Kamal Haasan and R. Madhavan. Trisha made her debut in Hindi film industry with the Priyadarshan film Khatta Meetha, starring opposite Akshay Kumar.
Krishnan recently replaced Rani Mukherjee as the Brand Ambassador of Fanta India.[15] She is the brand ambassador of Scooty Pep+, for which she has replaced Preity Zinta. She is also the brand ambassador for Vivel Di Wills, a product by ITC.
